TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCH, Friday, June 12

Parents of both schools are providing lunch for the entire staff (45 people!), and tables will be decorated with donated flowers. Teachers and staff will be working on Friday, though there is no school for kids. Thanks to all of you who have offered to help feed and create a festive atmosphere for our teachers!

Donations of food are still being accepted. We are serving main dish salads (such as pasta salads, bean salads, potato salads, rice salads, etc., of any kind), a green salad bar with fixings (see following suggestions), and desserts. Thanks to Deb Holland for providing home-baked bread! Please contact Judy Shaw at 434-2462 or judy_a_shaw@hotmail.com for more information.

Food and flowers should be delivered to the school cafeteria between 9 and 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning. However, for those of you who need to deliver your food on Thursday, June 11, we have the capacity to refrigerate a limited number of items. Flowers and food delivered in advance can be brought to the office. Flowers will be displayed in the office and the teachers' lounge until Friday. Be sure to let Theresa know whether your food needs to be refrigerated, and she will take care of it.

We will have index cards in the cafeteria (in the office for you earlybirds) for you to describe your food, or you can fill one out in advance. It should have the name of your dish; if it's vegetarian, vegan, or contains meat; and if it contains any of these most common allergens: dairy, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, or wheat. Some of our teachers have dietary sensitivities and will appreciate your sensitivity to what they can safely eat. There's no need to change your recipes; it's enough to let people know what's there so they avoid it if necessary.

Please put your name on any serving dishes you leave with us. We'll have a roll of masking tape and a sharpie if you need to use them on Friday morning.

And again, thanks for your creativity and generosity!

Suggested salad "fixings":

Sliced mushrooms or radishes
Marinated artichoke hearts, legumes
Snap or snow peas
Lightly steamed vegetables, such as green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, etc.
Grated or sliced zucchini
Shredded cabbage
Hard-boiled eggs
Croutons
Carrot, celery, jicama sticks
Dips for veggie sticks -- french onion, guacamole
Tomatoes -- halved grapes, quartered cherries, chopped sandwich tomatoes
Grated or sliced cheeses
Salad dressing -- Italian, ranch, or your personal favorite
Dried cranberries, sliced dried apricots
Marinated/grilled strips of tofu or chicken or eggplant
Bacon

Harris/Eastside To Become Camas Ridge Community School

Harris and Eastside elementary schools, located at E. 29th and Harris, are merging to create a new elementary school with a new name for 2009–10. After reviewing suggestions from the students, staff and community members, the Eugene School Board on May 6 voted to formally close Harris and Eastside Elementary Schools and establish the new school, Camas Ridge Community School. The new school's name refers to the native camas lily and is designed to honor the neighborhood’s wildlife, geography and community.

Harris and Eastside Alternative elementary schools will have their chance to build a new school together.

In a unanimous vote Wednesday, the Eugene School Board gave the much-debated merger a green light, with the caveat that the new hybrid — to open this fall — will not be shielded from consideration for closure should declining enrollment and the dire budget outlook in the next biennium necessitate it.

Nor will the school have any additional resources after this year to help with the transition.

But staff members and parents from both schools have voiced optimism about the likelihood of success, having worked in tandem since October on a proposal.

The two schools have been sharing the Harris campus this year following Eastside’s move from nearby Parker Elementary. Superintendent George Russell last winter had recommended closing Harris, where enrollment had slipped in recent years, but the board balked when teachers from the two schools suggested a merger.

The school will emphasize project-based learning, arts integration and mixed-grade advisee classes for social problem-solving and decision-making.
